Meningitis is highly contagious and can spread through close contact or food. This serious disease can be prevented by taking a meningococcal vaccine. In case a person feels that he’s been in contact with a person with meningitis, he must ask the doctor to prescribe some antibiotics. There are a few types of vaccinations available for meningitis.

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) and Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4) are the main types. Both of these work in 90% of the cases. Haemophilus influenzae is also a vaccine for preventing pneumonia, meningitis and other diseases. Sometimes, pneumococcal vaccines can also be taken which provide protection from meningitis as well. Usually, it is recommended by the doctors that the kids get an MCV4 vaccination at the age of 11 or 12. A booster must also be taken at the age of 16. Some other people also need vaccination. People who think they have been in contact with a meningitis patient must go for the vaccination. Military recruits, students who have just started to live in dorms and people who travel a lot must go for meningitis vaccines. People who work in labs must also get themselves vaccinated against meningitis.

Some precautions must also be taken while getting a vaccination. If a person is ill, he must wait for some time and only go for vaccination when he gets better. Also, a person who has had an allergic reaction to the vaccination or any of its ingredients must avoid getting the shot. Some minor side effects may take place. In case the side effects are stronger, like very high fever or extreme allergic reaction, one must try to seek immediate medical help before the matter gets worse.
